Winter is almost here, and every year I decide that I want to drastically change my hair for the new season. I’ve done it all, from cutting it all off into a short bob to dying my brunette locks bleach blonde, but this year I’m at a loss with what to do for the colder months. As a beauty editor, I’m lucky enough to know lots of people that work in the hair industry, so I thought it made sense to reach out to the experts to find out what hair trends will be everywhere this winter, and get some much-needed inspiration for my next visit to the salon.
I reached out to Samantha Cusick, founder of Samantha Cusick London and Stā Studios, and Jordanna Cobella, colour and trends ambassador for Wella Hair and creative director of Cobella Salon, and after talking to them, I’m struggling to decide which trend is my favourite. From rich, glossy shades to short, boxy cuts, there’s something for all of us, so keep on scrolling for your ultimate guide to the biggest winter hair trends of 2023. I’m warning you, you’re probably going to want to book an appointment straight after reading this. In fact, I’ve got mine next week…
“This hairstyle is highly requested in the salon right now, and we’re even seeing celebrities braving the chop—Hailey Bieber being amongst my favourites to wear the perfect chin-skimming bob,” says Cusick. “These boxy bobs will be worn with that “undone” look this winter, the epitome of cool-girl chic.”
I’m personally a big fan of this hairstyle, and love the fact that people are favouring a more undone look, as it makes styling your hair a whole lot easier.
To add that tousled kind of texture, try a finishing cream like this one from Ouai.
Another way to get that tousled look is with a texture mist, and I’m loving this Sam McKnight one.
If spray products aren’t your thing, try this texture clay from Larry King instead.
“Our infatuation with cowgirl copper is crossing over into the winter months,” explains Cusick. “Cinnamon bronde is a fusion of warm, reddish-brown and strawberry-blonde shades. This blend creates a rich, multidimensional hair colour reminiscent of autumn hues. Think sophisticated yet vibrant.”
I have no doubt that this will be the colour of the winter, and I’m quite tempted to give it a go myself…
To keep your copper tones looking fresh this winter, try a gloss. This one from Pureology prevents fading for up to six washes.
Alternatively, this nourishing hair mask from Christophe Robin helps to enhance copper colours.
We all know that coloured hair needs some extra love, and this duo helps to restore shine.
“Wispy bangs are back, but in an elevated way compared to those ’90s wisps,” says Cusick. “Think soft, forehead-framing pieces that border on curtain bangs.”
If you have a full fringe, don’t fear, as you can still give this wispy style a go. Keep the side of your fringe a little longer to give that curtain-bang effect.
To get those perfectly styled face-framing pieces, use a blow-dry brush and work from roots to ends for volume and bounce.
Add a small amount of styling cream for a polished finish.

“This winter is all about embracing natural mid-browns and earthy, nature-inspired brunette shades,” explains Cusick. “This colour offers a low-maintenance choice, steering clear of high-maintenance highlights and deep hues. I like to fine-tune each client’s colour formula to match their natural hair level.”
In my opinion, this hair colour looks so chic and expensive.
Want that rich, glossy finish? A product like this one from Josh Wood will become your new best friend. The semi-permanent hair colour is perfect for in between appointments.
This Dphue treatment works to deepen your colour, and is perfect for the winter months.
This conditioner has been designed specifically to protect your brunette hair colour.
“’80s bed-head waves are imperfect undone waves that look natural, accidental and have that total bed head finish and messy vibe to them,” says Cobella. “In light of upcoming movie Priscilla, the backcombed, large and sexy silhouette of big hair is back.”
If only our hair really did look like this when we rolled out of bed…
To get those effortlessly undone waves, try a hair tool like this one from Babyliss.
Finally, finish with some salt spray to add a little bit more texture.
You could even try plaiting your hair before bed, but remember to use a silk scrunchie to prevent damage.
