Morning coat (also known as “cutaway coat”) — a formal men’s jacket that is worn as part of the “morning dress, which is a semi-formal Western dress code originated in the 19th century and is typically worn for daytime events such as weddings, formal garden parties, and horse races. The name originated from the practice of gentlemen in the 19th century riding a horse in the morning with a cutaway front and single-breasted coat.
In contrast to the earlier Frock coat from the 1840s–1860s, the Morning coat tended to have a more narrow, fitted silhouette and was not meant to be worn loose.
Main characteristics of the Morning Coat:
longer length in the back, which gradually tapers to a pair of tails;
cut away front, with distinctive curves;
not more than one or two buttons on the front.
