While January is typically associated with bunkering down, we all need to emerge for fresh air from time to time. Personally, I love a long, blustering walk,  but whether you’re walking in Hampstead Heath, Hackney Marshes, or the Highlands, you’ll need practical items that will keep you warm until spring arrives.

If you want outfits that will keep you toasty but are a little more interesting than a boring fleece and thermals, below, you’ll find seven items that will see you through a winter of outdoor activities in style. The first essential item you’ll need is a coat that will act like your very own portable heater, so I recommend you start with a puffer coat. Then, you’ll need all the classic winter staples for layering: chunky boots, thick knitwear, and accessories. However, I’ve also outlined small details to look out for within these categories.

So before you plan your next excursion, keep scrolling for the items that will keep you warm this winter.

Style Notes: The key item you’ll need is a mighty warm coat, and you really can’t beat a maxi puffer coat. This Arket ankle-skimming coat is our personal favourite.

The bestseller.

A fashion lover’s dream puffer.

Mega-cosy.

Style Notes: This winter’s leading boot trend lends itself to long winter walks, as there are lots of boots with chunky soles, wipe-clean leather, and rubber around right now. Mud? No problem.

Many of your favourite influencers have been spotted in these.

A true classic.

In case you really want to make a fashion statement…

Style Notes: For days when it’s really drizzly, swap that puffer for a raincoat that can be layered over your favourite knits.

This would work equally well in the park and for the walk to work.

This is a cult favourite brand for a reason.

Light and easy.

Style Notes: When it comes to layering, everyone needs a trusty roll-neck, and I’d recommend stocking up on lots of colours.

A great base layer to pile more jumpers over as needed.

Oversized, cosy perfection.

This will definitely convince me to brave the January chill.

Style Notes: Leggings are quietly having a resurgence outside the gym, and in my opinion they’re the best bet for winter walks—insulating, lightweight and blissfully flexible.

In my opinion, the Goodmove leggings from Marks & Spencer are the best on the high street.

These high-performance leggings have a cult following.

For those who prefer a loose fit.

Style Notes: Add a touch of luxury to your wintery walk with a cashmere scarf. A black or grey option is endlessly versatile, or you can opt for a colourful style to bring a dopamine hit to a grey day.

This gets bonus points for being made from recycled cashmere.

Irresistibly soft.

Add a jolt of colour to your walk wardrobe.

Style Notes: Anyone who has watched The Holiday knows that a cable-knit jumper is a winter essential.

From the silhouette to the texture, I love it all.

Layer over a form-fitting turtleneck jumper for added warmth.

This brown-grey tone is such a January mood.
