Along with slim rectangular specs and pointed toe court shoes, the wool skirt trend is right on track for a major comeback this winter. Whilst it certainly wins practicality points—wool is, of course, a winter-weather non-negotiable, that’s not the only reason we’ve fallen for this heavy-weight fabric this time around. Adding structure and texture, sleek wool skirts offer a malleable pallet infused with a polished edge that can be heightened or dimmed down depending on your styling choices.
Spotted all over the A/W runways styled with button-down shirts, tweed jackets, skin-grazing knits and boxy blazers, the season’s favourite skirt was a unanimous hit across brands. On the city streets, influencers are already playing to the tailored elements of the neat skirts, styling with traditional turtlenecks and sharp kitten heels on repeat.
Whilst wool mini skirts offer a playful way of styling the trending fabric, I’m especially interested in wool skirts that fall to the knee and below. This season, knee-grazing cuts have enjoyed a redemption arch akin to the Uggs renaissance of 2023. Though the “unflattering length” was once no-where to be seen, designers such as Miu Miu and Gucci have peppered in the out-of-date hem-line throughout their winter collections. Towards the maxi end of the skirting-scale, Christian Dior sent floor-grazing wool skirts onto the A/W runway, styled with matching jackets and refined jewels en mass.
Though wool skirts are as versatile as any cotton equivalent, these heavier styles look chicest when paired with a pointed toe heels or knee-grazing boot. When the weather calls for it, style up with warm tights and plenty of layers, but as we move towards spring time opt for bare legs and ballet flats to give the winter skirt a new lease of life.
