Fashion people have been obsessed with Khaite’s knitwear for years now. Ever since Katie Holmes stepped out in that two-piece bradigan in 2019 and put the New York–based brand well and truly on our radar, its cosy styles have been top of every editor’s, influencer’s and celebrity’s wish list. The knit bra (unsurprisingly) didn’t have quite as much staying power. But the cardigan that Holmes was spotted in is a different story.

There’s only a handful of pieces we would throw around the word “iconic” for in fashion—think a Burberry trench or Max Mara’s camel coats, perhaps an Hermès Birkin. But Khaite’s Scarlet cardigan is very close to reaching such heights in the world of luxury knitwear. Three years on and the knit is still selling out and still as chic as ever, and the most stylish people we know are still buying it. (Lucy Williams only recently caved.)

Katie Holmes made the cardigan go viral when she first stepped out in it in 2019.

If not yet iconic, Khaite’s cardigan has certainly proven its status as a timeless classic, which is why we’re only just spotlighting this knit now—because it’s expensive sitting at around £1800. We needed proof that the investment was going to be worth it. As well as standing the test of time and being certain the knit isn’t just a flash-in-the-pan cult piece, there’s also the quality to consider. It is made from the finest Mongolian cashmere, specifically chosen for its softness, according to Net-a-Porter. And we’ve also heard from first-hand reviews that it lasts well with care.

A serious investment it might be, but this is undoubtedly a piece you’ll cherish in your wardrobe for a very, very long time. Although stock is hard to track down, I’ve scoured the internet to find some for you. Keep scrolling and you’ll find links to shop Khaite’s Scarlet cardigan in a variety of beautiful neutral colours, as well as the brand’s newer versions (including the round-necked Caro and longer-line Lucy). Still not within budget? I’ve added some very similar, more affordable options below, too.

Aïda looks so cosy in the matching set.

Lucy finally caved and just bought “the cardigan to end all cardigans” as she called it.

We love this relaxed styling.

It works well with a bump too!

Black is so timeless.

This charcoal grey will look chic paired with your other neutrals.

The new Lucy version is slightly longer in length

This one is my personal obsession.

So chic.

The burgundy feels very autumnal.
