Sporran is a waist bag-purse, most often made of leather and worn on a belt, on a narrow strap or chain. Historically used to store small items or money, as the kilt has no pockets.

There are several types of sporrans — day sporran, semi dress, and dress sporran. Day sporrans are the simplest and practically unadorned. Semi dress sporrans are decorated with tassels and trimmed with seal fur. Dress sporrans are usually richly trimmed with various types of fur and decorated with metal.

Sporrans could be obtained free of charge for the duration of the service. At the end of the service, such sporrans had to be returned. Officers and sergeants were allowed to have their own sporrans with a unique style.

In modern times, a sporran is an integral decorative part of the national dress of the Scots.
