I’m not quite ready to admit that summer is coming to an end, but this New England gal is getting excited for soft knits and fall fashion! I wanted to share a few closet staples that I’ve been wearing often over the summer, and how I’ll be transitioning them for cooler weather.

Closet Staple #1: Off White Jeans

The “no white jeans after Labor Day” is a total thing of the past, especially if we’re talking about soft ecru / off-white which are beautiful for year-round!

Two off-white options I’d recommend is this Madewell style in Vintage Canvas for a wide leg cropped fit, or this J.Crew pair in Ecru (on flash sale!) for a slightly less wide fit with finished hems. With Madewell, just FYI their petite jeans tend to have more of a mid-high rise, so if you want a higher rise I’d go with their regular sizing and cut the hems.

For summer, I’ve been loving soft monochromatic pairings and using metallics as an accent color.

Transitioning this look can be as simple as layering a long trench over the entire outfit, and I plan on playing around with a long sleeve layer under the sweater vest. I would also try adding a chocolate brown belt (this color & width is perfect!) and suede handbag for deeper Fall hues and some texture. Since the outfit is all solid colors, I like a little pattern in the shoes or handbag.

If you’re not familiar with this trench coat, just be warned that it’s quite oversized for petites and hits past midi length on me. That being said, I LOVE the style, weight and drape of the fabric and how effortless it feels in a variety of outfits. I usually tie the belt around the back to give it some waist definition, and wear it open. Care-wise, I machine wash this on a gentle cycle and hang dry with no issues.

Closet Staple #2: Slip Skirt

I’ve done several posts in the past on how to style a slip skirt, and my love for them have not waned one bit! Below I have on the Quince 100% silk skirt in xs which measures 12.5″ across the waist (elastic) and 28-29″ in length.

For another option that I can be completely careless with: the Drop skirt (I take XXS) is a poly slip skirt that is super low-maintenance, wrinkle-resistant and great for travel outfits.

The vest + slip skirt combo is a foolproof formula when you want something understated and sophisticated. This particular Aritzia vest has a shrunken fit that fits small and narrow for me across the bust, so I sized up to a 0. I recommend sizing up if you are above an A cup or between sizes to minimize pulling at the chest buttons.

fall

Quince slip skirt xs, Quince sweater xs, J.Crew heels (old; similar), Naghedi tote ecru

There’s endless possibilities for slip skirts heading into cool weather, but an easy one is a cozy cardigan with sling back pumps or tall boots. I love the chunkier knit juxtaposed against a smooth and slinky bottom!

Closet Staple #3: Striped button-up

summer

Old Navy shirt xxsp (old color; similar good one), AF shorts (old, similar on sale),
Hermes belt + sandals (look for less), Sézane tote c/o

A classic blue & white stripe shirt is one of the most versatile pieces for a year-round capsule wardrobe. This Old Navy one has a very oversized fit that I’ve been preferring this year, but for a more classic fit, this lightweight silky cotton Everlane shirt is on sale and has been one of my staples for years.

Fall

J.Crew shrunken sweater xxs, Aritzia crop pants 0 regular, Ann Taylor shoes (similar), Naghedi tote medium, Edited Pieces belt xxs

I swapped out the white linen shorts for a variety of deeper neutral tones in a similar color family. These Aritzia cropped effortless pants are amazing if you’re petite and work in a corporate office!
