Mangosteen, often referred to as the “queen of fruits,” is a tropical fruit known for its sweet and tangy flavor. It grows predominantly in Southeast Asia – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines being the primary countries.
Mangosteens are roughly the size of a small apple and have a thick, dark purple rind. Inside, the fruit contains soft, white segments that are juicy and fragrant. The flavor is a unique blend of sweet and sour, often described as a mix between peach, strawberry, and pineapple, with a hint of citrus. Its texture is creamy and slightly fibrous.
The name “mangosteen” is believed to be derived from the Malay word “manggis,” which reflects its native region. Despite its exotic origin, mangosteen has gained popularity worldwide.
To eat a mangosteen, the thick rind needs to be carefully cut open. Using a sharp knife, make a horizontal incision around the fruit, then gently twist and pull apart the halves to reveal the edible segments inside. These segments can be eaten fresh, either on their own or as part of a fruit salad. Mangosteen also pairs well with other tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and papaya.
Nutritionally, mangosteen is rich in antioxidants, particularly xanthones, which have been studied for their potential health benefits. It also provides vitamins C and B9 (folate), along with essential minerals like potassium and magnesium. Mangosteen is considered a low-calorie fruit, making it a good option for those looking to include it in a balanced, healthy diet.
