Another day, another hair trend to add to our vision boards. It’s no secret that bob hairstyles are popular right now—the stacked bob and the Italian bob are just two trending offshoots. However, there’s a new style in town, and it might just be the coolest one yet. Say hello to the shaggy bob.
Loved by celebrities and influencers alike, the shaggy bob has been spotted on the likes of Lizzo, Alexa Chung and Jenna Ortega. This grungy style is a far cry from the sleek, polished bobs we’re used to seeing, and we’re not mad about it.
So, what exactly is the shaggy bob hair trend? “This style of bob can be shorter or longer, but with the characteristic of very texturised ends,” explains Michele Antiga, signature colourist and stylist at Gielly Green.
“This can be achieved with a combination of soft graduations with a razor cut or dented scissors. I personally use dented scissors and texturise vertically to enhance natural movement.”
This hairstyle is the perfect low-maintenance trend for those who are time-strapped, as the messier it looks, the better. It’s all about that textured, choppy vibe that all the cool girls know and love. If you’re keen to give the trend a go, we recommend investing in a good texturising or sea salt spray to add some movement to the hair.
The best bit about this style is that according to Antiga, it can work well on all hair types. “You can easily adapt it to suit your hair,” he says. “You can style it with or without a fringe to suit all face shapes, too.” Sound good? We thought so. Keep on scrolling for all the inspiration you need.
You can use a curling wand to curl the ends of your shaggy bob for a more laid-back feel.
We love the addition of highlights to give this shaggy bob even more dimension.
The ultimate cool-girl look. The more colourful, the better!
Use a straightener on the ends in different directions to give your bob extra movement.
We are obsessed with this whole look.
Lizzo has added a slight curl to the ends of her shaggy bob, and it’s a style we’ll be re-creating ASAP.
As mentioned above, a sea salt spray will give your hair that effortlessly textured look, and we love this one from Bumble and Bumble.
Another great product to give you that messy look is a finishing cream. This one by Ouai also adds shine to the hair to keep your ends looking healthy.
To add a loose curl, try a curling wand with a larger barrel like this fun yellow one by Drybar.
If you prefer that straight, slightly flicky look, you can’t go wrong with the original hair straightener from GHD.
To finish things off, opt for a texturising hairspray to keep your look in place all day (and night) long.
