Putting together an outfit can be a lot of fun, but everyone has mornings when they just don’t have the effort to give to it. When such a mood strikes, you need a roster of backup looks to riffle through; those you know you feel (and look) good in every time.

Whether you consider yourself a minimalist or not, sometimes the wisest thing to do is to opt for simplicity. Sure, a white tee and jeans might not seem exciting, but if it’s going to get you from A to B while keeping you stylish—yes, this combo will forever be considered stylish—then it’s worth leaning on occasionally.

But there are other, less-obvious, outfit formulas I’m keen to share with you. They’re just as easy as jeans and a tee, but with a little extra flair that will let those around you know you’re clued into the latest fashion. From the addition of a trending shoe to considered splashes of colour, these looks have that ineffable ‘je ne sais quoi’. I’m sure you’ll agree—scroll on to see and shop.

Style Notes: A black coat is one of the best sartorial investments you can make. It goes with everything, but it looks especially classic with straight blue jeans.

COS coats are exceptionally good this year.

I’ve heard only great things about these particular jeans.

The pearl details make these ballet flats look extra elevated.

Style Notes: Trying to break your habit of wearing nothing but black? Same. This all-neutrals look is definitely one I’m going to recreate.

This would also make an ideal cover-up for evening events.

This heavy knit is perfect for cold winter days.

Instant cool points.

Style Notes: The quickest way to toughen up a slink slip skirt is by adding a leather jacket. Very rock ‘n’ roll.

Understated, versatile and well worth investing in.

This staple belongs in every wardrobe.

An easy piece to transition from winter to spring to summer.

Style Notes: Comfy and casual, this is a foolproof combination for running errands or meeting friends for brunch.

How cosy does this jumper look?

These jeans are beloved by many.

It’s impossible to be in a bad mood with this cheerful bag slung over your shoulder.

Style Notes: Teddy bear coats continue to be a top outerwear choice, and is such an easy way to elevate a simple black dress.

This could easily go from day to night.

The jacket that keeps appearing on my Instagram feed.

A classic black heel is a wardrobe must-have.

Style Notes: If you’re concerned with keeping up with the trends, a leather trench coat should be top of your to-buy list for 2024.

I’d believe you if you told me this was designer.

The sleeves really make this stand out.

Thanks to its low heel, this pair of heeled boots is comfier than most.

Style Notes: No, we’re still not over knitted vests. Only because we haven’t run out of ways to wear them yet—next on the list, this smart-casual ensemble.

Wherever you’re going and whatever you’re up to, this white shirt is a safe choice.

This one-size vest is so easy to throw over as an extra layer.

Tailored trousers will never let you down.

Style Notes: Grey coats are both current and classic, and they look really chic with every shade under the sun. Of course, a pop of blue (or a similarly good-mood hue) will liven things up.

I keep seeing this exact coat on influencers, which I’m taking as a sign that I should add it to my wish list.

Not just stylish, but warm, too.

White jeans look stylish no matter the time of year.
