Friulano is a white grape variety native to northeastern Italy, especially the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where it is a symbol of local winemaking heritage. Formerly known as Tocai Friulano (until EU regulations restricted the use of “Tocai”), this variety produces dry, elegant wines with a distinct regional character. Friulano thrives in marl and sandstone soils and benefits from the cool Alpine-influenced climate, resulting in wines with freshness, complexity, and aging potential.
Flavor
Friulano wines typically exhibit aromas of white flowers, pear, green almond, and citrus, with hints of herbs and minerality. On the palate, they are medium-bodied, soft, and balanced, often with a slightly bitter almond finish that is characteristic of the variety.
Food Pairing
Friulano pairs beautifully with prosciutto di San Daniele, seafood, vegetable risottos, and soft cheeses. Its freshness and delicate herbal notes also complement dishes featuring asparagus, artichokes, and light poultry preparations.
