As the winter chill sets in, there comes a time when we must cast aside even our warmest of skirts and dresses in favour of long-line trousers that over offer full coverage and additional snugness.

Unless you’re a trouser person through and through, you might find that styling your trousers in the winter is tricker than you feel it should be. Different to assembling around your jeans—which always look chic with a colourful trainer or smart loafer—trousers come with a formal element woven in, meaning that the wrong shoe pairing can have your outfit looking overly prim, or simply mismatched.

Well, I’m happy to share that in my time as a fashion editor, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to help your trouser outfits always look streamlined, considered and above all, chic—starting with a simple shoe pairing, which has already been signed off by fashion icons Jennifer Lawrence and Katie Holmes this season.

Above all other shoe shapes, I maintain that an almond-toe boot is the ultimate side kick to a great trouser. The softer, slightly rounded finish helps to elongate the leg, in a soft, natural way that never looks harsh.  Whether styling a flowing wide-leg trouser, or a straight-leg style, an almond-toe shoe pairing—be it a heeled boot or flat mary jane is my ultimate go-to across the winter months. Styled to perfection by actress Jennifer Lawrence, who wore a pair of brown almond-toe boots with grey wool trousers, a white tee and soft brown scarf, Lawrence’s shoe pairing worked naturally with the rest of her outfit, complementing the casual nature without dressing down the look. Actress Katie Holmes styled a tonal trouser and shoe pairing, choosing white wide-leg trousers and complimentary white almond-toe boots. Creating a cohesive look through the use of clever styling, the actress was left to play around a bright mint jumper, in a wearable and relaxed way.

Trust me when I tell you that this is the only shoe silhouette you need to get you through the winter months. Whether you’re keen to shop a new winter boot, or eager to try the mary-jane flats trend, shop my edit of the best almond-toe boots and shoes below.

In my opinion, Chelsea boots are a winter weather must have. Pair with fuzzy socks and stay warm in style.

Knee high-boots are a cold season no-brainer. Wear underneath wide leg trousers for extra warmth or style with a cosy knitted dress.

Dress these up with some embellished tights and enjoy your party season in comfort and style.

I’m so drawn to the wider-than-normal cut on the chic ankle boots.

The exposed stitch detail elevates the feel of these extra long Chelsea boots.

Style almond-toe kitten heels if you’re looking for a smarter finish.

Pair with leggings and a cosy knit for a fool-proof winter ready outfit.

Brown is a major colour trend this season. Shop the look here.

Take the mary jane trend into party season and style these heeled shoes.

Classic riding boots will never go out of style.
