Aside from the fact that both Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham are married to men who I would acknowledge as British royalty, the two have never struck me as having very much in common. On second thought, I’m coming to conclude that their similarities might outweigh their differences. Both extraordinary women are former performers, have both spent many years in the public eye, and on analysis, they both seem to possess quite a similar sense of style.

The two favour a relaxed but polished approach to style, often opting for a comfortable jean for a casual event, or a smart suit set when dressing up. Fond of a refined look, both mange to experiment with seasonal, trending silhouettes without veering from their personal style, consistently chic ensembles that I’m always drawing inspiration from.

This winter, their similarities have been staring me in the face, as both women recently took to styling the draped dress trend that has been cropping up everywhere this season.

Styling her beige off the shoulder draped dress, to the Variety Power Of Women event in L.A., Markle kept her accessories to a minimum, choosing a small black clutch bag that stood out against her neutral toned dress. The nature of the draped dress affords the wearer the option to veer on the minimal side when it comes to accessories, as the added pleats and folds inject enough texture and interest to the look. Wearing her draped dress to a lunch in Nottinghill earlier this season, Beckham opted for a similar styling route, forgoing layers of jewellery and paring her look back to only the essentials: large shades, a compact handbag and her favourite peep toe boots.

If Markle and Beckham declare it in fashionable, I’m more than happy to concede. Shop the chicest pieces that work with the draped dress trend below.

A classic black dress can be styled in a myriad of ways, but in winter I’ll always come back to a knee-high boots and oversized coat pairing.

Every wardrobe need a little black dress. Wear with boots during the day, or style with heels in the evening.

Throw a flush of colour into your winter wardrobe and consider an apple green draped dress when shopping the trend.

Chocolate brown in a trending colour this season.

You’re party wear problems are solved! This asymmetric dress styles so well with black slingbacks or pointed-toe court shoes.

Go sleeveless in Mango’s light grey draped dress. Style with statement earrings and opt for slinky shawl to keep you warm.

This deep emerald tone looks beautiful with gold jewellery.

Loewe have mastered the draped dress trend. Their elegant iteration is high on my wish list.

The perfect party season dress. Style with sleek slingbacks and large earrings.
