Recipe of Pea Porridge, a rustic and hearty dish popular in many European cuisines, especially in Nordic and Eastern European traditions. Made from dried peas and slowly simmered until creamy, it’s a nutritious and satisfying comfort food, often served with fried onions, bacon, or sausage.
Cooking Time:
2 hours
Ingredients:
1 cup dried yellow or green peas
4 cups water
1/2 tsp salt
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp butter or oil
Optional: 3 strips bacon or 1 smoked sausage, chopped
Pepper, to taste
Recipe:
Rinse and soak the dried peas overnight or for at least 6 hours.
Drain and place in a pot with 4 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until soft and mushy, stirring occasionally.
If using bacon or sausage, fry it in a pan until browned. Remove and set aside.
In the same pan, sauté chopped onion in butter or oil until golden.
When peas are cooked, mash them with a spoon or blend slightly for creaminess.
Add salt, pepper, sautéed onions, and optional meat to the porridge. Stir well.
