Céline Vipiana (22 Nov 1915 – 17 Oct 1997) was a luxury fashion clothing designer from Paris, France. She is best known as the co-founder of the iconic fashion house “Céline”, which has left an indelible mark on the industry with its timeless elegance and understated luxury. Vipiana’s journey into fashion was driven by her passion for quality craftsmanship and her desire to create practical yet stylish clothing for modern women.
In 1945, Céline Vipiana, alongside her husband Richard, opened a boutique on Rue Malte in Paris. Initially, the store specialized in made-to-measure children’s shoes, designed with the same attention to detail and quality as high fashion. These shoes quickly gained popularity among Parisian parents, leading to the expansion of the business. The success of the children’s shoe line laid the foundation for what would later become the “Céline” brand, known for its dedication to quality and timeless style.
By the 1960s, Céline Vipiana had successfully transitioned her brand from children’s footwear to ready-to-wear women’s fashion, responding to the growing demand for luxury goods that were both practical and elegant. In 1987, with the approval of the Vipiana family, LVMH group purchased a share of “Celine” for $540 million dollars. Vipiana remained at the helm of “Celine” until her passing in 1997.
