Recipe of the French Onion Soup, as a classic French dish known for its deep flavors of caramelized onions and rich beef broth, topped with a crusty bread slice and melted cheese. This comforting soup is perfect for cold days and brings a taste of French bistro cuisine to your home.
Cooking Time:
1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients:
3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
8 cups beef broth
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 bay leaf
1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped
salt and pepper, to taste
1 baguette, sliced
1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese
Recipe:
In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
Add the minced garlic and flour to the onions and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Pour in the beef broth and white wine, stirring well. Add the bay leaf and thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-30 minutes.
While the soup simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F. Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them until golden.
Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, place a slice of toasted baguette on top of each, and sprinkle generously with grated Gruyère cheese.
Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.
Serve hot, and enjoy the rich, savory flavors of this classic soup.
